Diamond Squid T-Shirt

It is also called Calamaro DIamante and is alive all over the world, both in tropical and subtropical seas and owes its name to the particular shape of the fins that run along the mantle that give it a rhombus / diamond shape.

A diamond of nature precious not only for its shape but also for the very particular colors that its skin takes on to communicate its moods.
There are many details of this cephalopod:

• the Diamond Squid is the only species of cephalopod to be monogamous throughout its life that lasts a year, as if to say … “a diamond is forever”.
• It lays its eggs in alternating periods throughout the year in tropical seas.
• The eggs are laid in large gelatinous cylinders.
• It can reach the length of 1 meter and the weight of 30 kg.

Katherine Lu tells us how she made the photo of the diamond squid

This photograph was taken during blackwater dive in open ocean where the ocean bottom is more than 200 metres below. Every night the great vertical migration occurs in the ocean where creatures that live in the deep mesopelagic layers migrate up to the shallower epipelagic zone, returning to depth before dawn. I was very fortunate to have a rare encounter with the diamond squid also known as the rhomboid squid (Thysanoteuthis rhombus). This squid was not very large, and was perhaps a juvenile, but incredibly beautiful as it put on a show of lights and colours for me. While my encounter was very brief I was lucky enough to be able to capture this image before it disappeared into the darkness.
